Even though it may sound like it, I really don't want to be among the
chorus of Studio 10+ bashers currently making their way through the
internet. I do, however, want to add my experiences as a consumer for
those who desire to upgrade to 10+.
I have an AMD 3000+ CPU with 1 GB of memory and a massive drive...plenty
of horsepower for such a program. I purchased Studio 8, then upgraded
to 9, then upgraded to 9+ and applied all corresponding patches from the
website. At 9+, I started to have intermittent problems with the
rendering process freezing midway through. I started having the program
shut itself down. I started to own a video editing package that was
becoming more and more useless to me.
So, I took the plunge and purchased 10+, thinking it would fix my
problems. My problems actually became worse. I have never been able to
render any video program as it shuts down right away. I have applied
all updates and patches, as well as all updates on all drivers in my
system...still to no avail.
My final eye-crossing step was to try to uninstall 10+ back to 9+, but
the uninstall process would have nothing of it. However, I was able to
uninstall 9+ and 8, but 10+ won't leave my system and now is non-
functional.
I have searched the plethora of FAQs on Pinnacle's website as well as
the internet, and have found many others with my same problems, but no
solution at this point.
So...if you're thinking about upgrading to 10+ to try to solve problems
or take advantage of the latest features, BUYER BEWARE. Make sure your
current version is stable before attempting an upgrade, expect the
worst, and hope for the best. Hey, it may work for you, and I truly
hope it does. Best of luck!
If you do upgrade, ask yourself the questions before buying such a
program:
o Am I getting what I'm paying for (i.e., don't expect much if you're
paying little)?
o Can a program that releases SIGNIFICANT patches after major new
releases be a good sign of stability and accuracy in programming? To
me, it makes no sense to purchase a program, then be forced to download
a HUGE patch at every new release! 8 went to 9, then a HUGE patch took
it to 9.4, then 10 was installed, then a HUGE patch to 10.5. It just
doesn't make sense.
The people who really should read this post (the authors of Studio and
Pinnacle as a company) probably won't, but that's ok. My dollars speak
more than a posting to a newsgroup. I've moved onto an Adobe product
which has given me absolutely no issues...for about the same cost as a
major upgrade from Pinnacle. In sum, I've spent about $200 on all the
Pinnacle CDs I've purchased--add to that the countless hours of
frustration, and it's safe to say that Pinnacle has received it's last
dollar from me.
I won't even try to sell my Pinnacle copy to anyone on eBay because I'd
hate to send someone into the same abyss of unsuccessful upgrades and
patches from which I've now removed myself (almost...save for my 10+
that's now STUCK on my machine until my next reformat!). I bought a
shredder last month with a builtin CD shredder.
...I think it's time to take that CD shredder on its maiden voyage!
Best of luck to all who are using this program! Happy editing to all!
